“ | Are we BLIND? DEPLOY THE GARRISON! MOVE! | „ |
~ Orson Krennic's most famous quote. |
“ | Oh, it's beautiful. | „ |
~ Krennic after watching the first test of the Death Star on Jedha City, resulting in its complete destruction. |
Director Orson Callan Krennic is the main antagonist in the Star Wars film Rogue One, as well as its prequel novel Catalyst.
He is the director of the Empire's Advanced Weapons Research division, and is in charge of constructing the Death Star for his superiors, Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader.
He was played by Ben Mendelsohn.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- His primary role in the film is to give the audience someone to root against, as Tarkin dies in A New Hope so he can't get his comeuppance here, while Darth Vader even without all of his redeeming qualities has lots of "evil is cool" moments.
- As a soldier in the Clone Wars, he massacred civilians and noncombatants whose only crime was being affiliated with the Separatists.
- He manipulates Galen Erso into helping him build the Death Star, lying about what his research would be used for.
- He orchestrates a war on Malpaz by framing them for supporting the Rebels. He does this both to sabotage his rival Tarkin and to assist the Empire in subjugating the world completely.
- He murders a group of engineers who try to leave the Death Star project by blowing up their facility.
- He tracks down Galen and his family to force them to return to the Death Star project. When Galen's wife Lyra tries to save him, Krennic has her killed by death troopers, then sends his troops to hunt down Galen's daughter Jyn and burns down Galen's house.
- He forces Galen to complete his work on the Death Star by threatening Jyn's safety.
- He tests the Death Star on Jedha City when Tarkin gives his approval. At first, Krennic wanted to destroy the entire moon, but even Tarkin felt that was too much and ordered him to scale down. The test firing obliterates the city and kills countless people, including Saw Gerrera and his rebels, with Krennic calling the destruction "beautiful."
- He threatens to execute Galen's scientists when informed there is a traitor in their midst. When Galen confesses that only he was the leaker, Krennic executes the scientists anyway out of spite, despite having no reason to think they're anything but loyal to the Empire. He then knocks Galen to the ground and gloats to him about Jedha's destruction.
- He leaves Galen to die when the rebels attack the Eadu facility.
- He directs the garrison forces on Scarif to destroy the rebels, resulting in the deaths of most of Rogue One before Tarkin arrives to finish the rest of them off.
- He holds Jyn at gunpoint as she's about to transmit the Death Star plans, gloating that she's too late to stop him, before trying to kill her.
- While his death of being hit directly by a blast from the Death Star superlaser is fairly brutal, it's ultimately well-deserved poetic justice, as he's killed by the very thing he created.
