NOTE: This page contains information only about the movie version of Peter Pettigrew, as his original novel counterpart is not a Hate Sink. |

Peter Pettigrew, also known by his nickname Wormtail, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Bellatrix Lestrange) of the Harry Potter film series. He serves as the main antagonist of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the secondary antagonist of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, a cameo character in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, a minor antagonist in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and a supporting antagonist in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1.
While the original version of Peter comes nowhere close to being a Hate Sink due to his tragic and remorseful nature, the film version of Peter is depicted as more sinister, evil and sadistic and he is shown to enjoy all the suffering he causes to everyone.
He was portrayed by Timothy Spall (who also portrayed Beadle Bamford in the 2007 live-action film adaptation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street), while his younger self was portrayed by Charles Hughes in flashbacks. While disguised as Scabbers, he was portrayed by the late animal actor Dex.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is a textbook coward who betrayed his close friends James and Lily Potter and sent them to Lord Voldemort. This shows how traitorous he is. What make this worse is that differently from his novel counterpart he doesn’t show any remorse for this.
- He has no regard for human life as shown when he gladly murdered Cedric Diggory in cold blood when a powerless Voldemort ordered him to do so for being "the spare". He also smiled ominously at Frank Bryce and tried his best to kill him. Worst of all, he immortalized himself as an irredeemable monster when he remorselessly mass-murdered twelve innocent Muggle bystanders and deliberately blamed his close friend, Sirius Black while he himself cowardly hid in plain sight as a rat named "Scabbers" and manipulated Ron by being his pet for the next twelve years.
- He is manipulative, claiming that Sirius and Lupin were his old friends as a way to escape.
- He is so vile that he sought out Lord Voldemort, and played a direct role in Voldemort's revival, making him directly responsible for the incredible anguish and grief of the Second Wizarding War. He also watched gleefully when Voldemort tortured Garrick Ollivander, giddily trotting behind the raging overlord. Even Voldemort looks down on him, gives him sarcastic compliments, and accuses him of almost taking up permanent residency in a gutter.
- He has no qualms about continuing to do Voldemort's will after Little Hangleton as he painfully constrained Charity Burbage and gleefully locked up five innocents (all of whom were heroes) in the dungeons of Malfoy Manor, and watched over them until he was incapacitated by Dobby, which is played for satisfaction as Dobby playfully asked who would get to keep his wand. Then he is never heard from ever again.
- While he was Laughably Evil in the third movie and had an Evil is Cool vibe in the fourth, he ultimately subverts both entirely to the point no one even bothers to mention him once after the Malfoy Manor incident.
- Unlike his original version, he has no redeeming qualities and subverts all of his likeable qualities in the seventh movie.
Trivia[]
- In the original novels by J. K. Rowling, Peter Pettigrew is not as evil and despicable because he has remorse for his actions. Moreover, he also tried to redeem himself and his death is played for sympathy. Whereas his film version is merely incapacitated in an embarrassing way committed in defense of the innocent after which he is never seen or mentioned ever again.
