Life...is pain. Pain...is everything. You...you will learn!
~ Stegman, summing up his entire mindset on the world.

Peter Stegman is the main antagonist of the 1982 Canadian-American thriller film Class of 1984. He is a teenage high school thug who rules over his own gang of neo-Nazi hooligans who also supply drugs and prostitution services to students as well as extortion rackets. He is feared by all the kids and staff due to his ruthless and unhinged nature. He is the archenemy of protagonist Andrew Norris.

He was portrayed by Timothy Van Patten.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • For starters, he and his gang practically rule their high school with an iron fist, running teenage drug and prostitution rackets just for fun. Their drugs actually drive at least one student to (accidental) suicide, falling to his death after climbing up a flagpole, which Stegman shows zero guilt towards.
  • It's said by a cop that he and his gang committed several assaults, gang fights, dozens of murders
  • Though he and his mother are on good terms, he keeps up a facade to prevent her from finding out about his real nature and is unlikely to care about her. What’s worse is that sometime during the movie, he may have killed her, regardless of whether if she found out about his nature or not, since she wasn’t seen afterwards.
  • He and his gang are all Neo-Nazis. Nuff said.
  • He skins Terry's lab animals alive, driving him murderously insane, ultimately (albeit indirectly) causing his death in a fit of paranoid, vengeful rage.
  • He bloodies up his own face to frame Andy for it.
  • He has Artie stabbed under the merest suspicion that he tattled on the gang.
  • Blaming Andy rather than himself for not "getting the gig" as an official pianist after constantly disrupting the class, Stegman breaks into Andy's house and promptly gangrapes his (pregnant) wife, Diane. The gang then take Diane back to the school and try to kill her and Andy both, meanwhile Stegman leaves the gang to fend for themselves.
  • He asks Andy to pull him up to safety, only to then try and kill Andy with his knife while he's doing so.
  • Overall, the fact that the movie goes out of its way to state that Andy never got charged for Stegman and his gang getting brutally murdered shows that their deaths were all played purely for satisfaction.

Trivia[]

  • His actor, Timothy van Patten has the opposite personality of Peter Stegman. Van Patten is "sweet and gentle" while Stegman is ruthless and sadistic.
