Preston Northwest is a major antagonist in the 2012 Disney XD series Gravity Falls.
He is the patriarch of the Northwest clan who tries his best in preserve his whole family's high-class status, no matter the cost. He is also the husband of Priscilla Northwest, as well as the father of Pacifica Northwest.
In his first appearance, he was played by Chris Parnell. Afterwards, he was later voiced by Nathan Fillion, who also voiced Johnny Worthington III in the Monsters, Inc. franchise and Sterling in Cars 3.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He's abusive towards his daughter Pacifica, forcing her to obey him at all costs. It's also shown that he's used psychological conditioning on her, making her obey him with a bell like some sort of pet.
- He's very deceitful, having lied about his past, covering up that his ancestor Nathaniel didn't actually found the town.
- He looks down on people poorer than him, including Dipper.
- In his first major appearance, "Northwest Mansion Mystery", his house is haunted by a ghost of a dead lumberjack while he's having a party. Rather than doing what the Lumberjack says (let the common folk of Gravity Falls in), he cowardly decides to hide in a panic room. He's leaving several fellow rich people, including children, to their deaths out of nothing but snobbery. He even said that they'll eat the butler if they ran out of food, and tried to stop Pacifica from lifting the curse, meaning that he was completely fine with others suffering and committing to cannibalism before starving to death alongside his wife and daughter just so their public image wouldn't be ruined.
- Making matters even worse, the "thisisnotawebsitedotcom.com" website reveals he unfairly grounded Pacifica for letting the townsfolk attend the party even though this act saved everyone in the end.
- He was willing to sell out the town to Bill Cipher, and willingly asked to join him. Bill responded by deforming his face, which is played for complete satisfaction. Furthermore, this results in his wealth being subverted due to all of his weirdness bonds for which he invested.
Trivia[]
- Preston helps stop Bill Cipher in the finale. If this was a true attempt at redemption, rather than just pragmatism, it would mean he no longer qualifies.
- He is so far the only Hate Sink to be a Comic Relief as Preston is a Comic Relief contrast to one of Gravity Falls' darkest episodes.
