“ | Think of it. Hitler bent a weakened nation to his will using nothing but raw charisma. All that from a man who only made corporal. A man whom art school wouldn't deign to let in. His charisma appeared after he hit his thirties. Not so with your brother Johan. He was a leader of men even as a mere boy. Charisma of messianic proportions. But even Jesus Christ had help. Consider the three Magi and John the Baptist who heralded the Savior's arrival into the world. How they readied the way for his glory. Likewise, the four of us have been keeping track of Johan's talents ever since he was a mere boy. Exciting, wouldn't you say? | „ |
~ Professor Goedelitz speech to Nina, showing his suprematist ideas. |
Professor Günther Goedelitz is a supporting antagonist in the hit 1994 manga series by Naoki Urasawa, Monster and in its 2004 anime adaptation. He was one of the founders of a German neo-Nazi organization that planned to make Johan Liebert their new leader and destroy any "inferior races".
He was voiced by the late Iemasa Kayumi in Japanese and Douglas Lee in English.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- He intended to restart the horrific Nazi regime of Germany due to it fitting his supremacist ideals over life, even planning to indoctrinate John to be their organization's new leader with the intent of forcing the entire planet under his restarted totalitarian regime, and kidnapping Johan's sister, one of the few people the latter cares for, to try to blackmail Johan into leading them.
- While The Baby and Peter Capek are equally on board with this, even they have slight redeeming traits which Goedelitz lacks.
- He masterminds the genocidal plot to burn down the entire Turkish village and every last man, woman and child present to begin establishing his bigoted world order, with the Baby confirming that their goal is to destroy all "inferior" races until only the "strong race of Germans" are left.
- After kidnapping Nina, he gloats to her how Adolf Hitler came to power, showing clear supremacist ideology by presenting him as a man above everyone else.
- He comperes Johan to Jesus Christ and even comperes himself and the other leaders of the organization to Johan's three Magi's and John the Baptist, even saying how exciting the concept of being the master of a God is.
- He murders the Turkish prostitute Ayse by drowning her, leaving her child without a parent. Even the narrative portrays it as something truly horrible, with Nina attempting to avenge her friend and remembering the last words of Ayse, wanting to warn the Turkish district and her thanking Nina for giving her hope, right before that hope was taken away from her, to further drive the point of him being a hate sink.
- Despite his short screen time, the narrative makes it clear that he is supposed to be hateable, as his entire conversation with Nina is just filled with him sadistically smiling, looking like he is subtly mocking her with his fake politeness and even subtly threatening Nina by saying that she shouldn't escape after coming there on her own volition, as well as his killing Ayse being treated as inexcusable. Even the scene's music is played to make the viewer uncomfortable and Nina herself during the conversation clearly looks at Goedelitz with nothing but disgust.
- His death is played with no sympathy, as after all his smugness and talk of him being the master of the next Jesus he ends up as just another of Johan's victims. Even Tenma and Nina, who generally see the value in all lives, don't mourn his death.
