NOTE: This page is only about Quirinus Quirrell's film incarnation as his original book incarnation is not a Hate Sink. |
“ | Yes, he does seem the type, doesn't he? Next to him, who would suspect p-p-poor, st-stuttering P-Professor Quirrell? | „ |
~ Quirrell revealing his true colours to Harry Potter. |
Professor Quirinus Quirrell is the main antagonist of the 2001 film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. He was the Muggle Studies professor at Hogwarts, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher during Harry Potter's first year there, and secret follower of Lord Voldemort.
While the original version of Quirrell does not count as a Hate Sink due to being portrayed sympathetically, his film counterpart lacks the disqualifying qualities.
He was portrayed by Ian Hart.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He wants to steal the Philosopher's Stone to restore Lord Voldemort's physical form and power, which would allow the Dark Lord to harm millions of innocent people. To this end, he brings a troll into Hogwarts as a diversion for him to steal the Stone, which nearly killed Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and potentially could have taken more lives of Hogwarts students and staff.
- He has no bones over harming little children, and he hence attempts to kill Harry throughout the film, first by jinxing his broomstick during a Quidditch match and second by pinning him down and choking him, and that is barring him callously endangering kids and teenagers with a mountain troll on Halloween.
- He is so selfish that he preys on unicorns, which are among the purest creatures of all time, and drinks their blood to keep himself and Voldemort alive.
- He is a dishonest scapegoater, using the ultimately innocent Severus Snape to divert suspicions from himself.
- Him suffering pure karma from Lily Potter's Sacrificial Protection slowly vaporizing half of his already dying body is played for complete satisfaction and stress relief.
- Unlike his book counterpart, he is given no tragedy, insecurities or redeeming qualities whatsoever and is implied to be a willing servant of Voldemort out of fanaticism. There is also no evidence of him being treated abusively by Voldemort or resisting his evil influence from a desire to live a good way (which was confirmed to happen in the novels).
- He retains his cowardly personality, which helps his Hate Sink status.
- All he cares about is doing whatever he can to ensure Voldemort continues being extremely evil in a more efficient way than the Dark Lord was currently, and he has nothing redeeming about himself whatsoever.
