Rankin is a one-time character on Dexter. He appears in the season 5 premier, My bad.

What makes him a Hate Sink?[]

  • He is introduced repeatedly ringing a bell and pounding on the counter at a bait shop, demanding service. This already establishes him as an impatient and ill-tempered man.
  • When he notices Dexter looking at him (because Rankin was making a scene), he demands to know what's Dexter's problem. When Dexter responds that nothing is wrong, Rankin calls him a retard and tells him to get the fuck out of the bait shop, despite the fact that Rankin doesn't even work there.
  • When Dexter reveals to Rankin that his wife Rita just died, Rankin, rather than show sympathy, tells Dexter "Well I'm real sorry for your fucking loss but you're dead wife can suck my dick."
  • He is evidently very stupid, given that he deliberately provoked an upset man who was larger than him and armed with a weapon.
  • His entire purpose is to serve as someone for Dexter to impulsively kill and break his code to relieve some of his stress after Rita's death. As such, he is made to be as unlikable as possible so the audience doesn't lose sympathy for Dexter breaking his code by killing a non murderer.
  • The fact that he's not a murderer and does not fit Dexter's criteria does not make him a scapegoat, as he's still an unlikable jerk with no redeeming qualities who insults a man's dead wife for no good reason. In addition, he brings his death upon himself by deliberately provoking a larger man armed with a weapon even though he could clearly see the man was about to retaliate.

Trivia[]

  • Rankin's name is not given in the episode dialogue, but is mentioned in the credits and on Showtime's official Dexter website, listing him amongst Dexter's other victims.
