~ Red Skull mocking Wolverine before engaging him in a fight. |
Johann Shmidt, better known as the Red Skull, is the secondary antagonist in Old Man Logan. He is a fascist leader who organized the superheroes' downfall twenty years prior to the story. He eventually becomes President of the United States, and rules the supervillain-themed United States with an iron fist, turning the country into a complete dystopia.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is a textbook sadist who gleefully mocks his enemies in any way he possibly can. When the superheroes are defeated, he rants to a gravely wounded Bucky Barnes (the current Captain America) about his plans for the United States, before gouging the super soldier's eyes out.
- Later, he turns Bucky into the Winter Soldier, programming him as an assassin. Bucky’s dying words thank Logan for killing him, meaning that the Winter Soldier was fully aware of his actions and could sadly do nothing about them.
- His rule over the United States is a fascist dystopia. It's stated that the closest thing humans have for hope is to pray that the heroes will return some day.
- Hawkeye also implies that other countries have it even worse than Red Skull's regime.
- He decides to wear Captain America's bloodstained uniform in the rebuilt White House to taunt his enemies, while also having a display case of hero memorabilia that marks the all superheroes. Worse, their demises were confirmed, with an issue in Old Man Hawkeye detailing their deaths in various ways.
- He expresses pleasure at Hawkeye's death and rubs it into Logan's face, before mocking Logan himself on how he is no longer Wolverine from twenty years ago. Before Logan decapitates him, Red Skull insults Logan on his supposed cowardice, believing he is still afraid.
