Rex Pester is the secondary antagonist of The Rugrats Movie. He is a smug interviewer who has no empathy.
He was voiced by Tim Curry, who also voiced Drake in The Pebble and the Penguin, Slagar the Cruel in Redwall and Von Talon in Valiant.
What makes him a Hate Sink?[]
- When he arrives on the scene to interview Didi about the disappearance of her children, he bluntly says "Tell us how it feels to know you may never see your children again." When Betty tells him off for being inconsiderate, he apologizes...and then asks the same question again with a huge grin on his face, the only difference being that he says "please".
- When Betty gets mad and tries to assault him while Stu and Grandpa Lou hold her back, Rex taunts her by pretending to box with her.
- He baits Drew into attacking Stu, his own brother, by asking him how it feels knowing his brother lost his only daughter (referring to Angelica, who went after the babies to get her Cynthia doll back after they disappeared with her into the woods) and telling him to "share his pain" when Drew gets shocked and angered at the news. This leads to Drew tackling Stu and nearly breaking his arm. He does this seemingly out of nothing more than sadistic amusement, as he even grins when telling Drew to share his pain, implying that he could tell Drew was going to attack Stu. It should be noted that Stu didn't do anything to Rex and even just helped Grandpa Lou hold Betty back when she tried to assault Rex. It should also be noted that Stu was not in anyway to blame for what happened, as it was Grandpa Lou who fell asleep when he was supposed to be watching the babies and Angelica (though admittedly, Rex was likely unaware of this fact).
- Rex demonstrates his lack of care for the Rugrats by consistently mispronouncing their names during his report. This not only highlights his apathy but also suggests that he is a poor reporter overall. He mistakenly refers to Tommy as "Tammy" (which is a girl's name), Dil as "Dale," Phil and Lil as "Bill and Jill," Chuckie as "Chunky" (an adjective rather than a name), and Angelica as "Amelia." Additionally, he claims that their pet horse is lost in the woods. However, their actual pet, Spike, is a dog, and Rex never refers to him by name. It's unclear where Rex got the idea that they have a pet horse.
- In the end, as a much more sympathetic news reporter is covering the story of how the Rugrats have been reunited with their families just as the circus monkeys have been reunited with their owners, Rex appears out of nowhere to rudely push her aside and try to cover the story himself.
- He has a very ugly design with his large and prominent teeth. It's also revealed in his last scene that he's balding and most of his hair is a toupee.
- Overall, he's such a jerk that everyone finds it amusing when he gets attacked by the circus monkeys despite the fact that he has already been injured by crashing his helicopter.
Trivia[]
- His last name is a pun. "Pester" means to annoy someone. This is further vindication of his HS status.
- In real life, he would have been fired for his attitude.
- Despite his HS status, he was well liked due to Tim Curry's performance and the scene where he gets all the Rugrats' names wrong.
