Someone was throwing stones: Roger was dropping them, his one hand still on the lever. Below him, Ralph was a shock of hair and Piggy a bag of fat . . . High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever.
~ Roger's dehumanization as he prepares to unleash the boulder.

Roger is the secondary antagonist of the 1954 novel Lord of the Flies and its film adaptations. He is a sociopathic boy and Jack Merridew's second-in-command.

He was portrayed by Roger Elwin in the 1963 film adaptation, and by Gary Rule in the 1990 film adaptation.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • Even before the boys started descending into savagery, he was already bullying other children by kicking over their sand castles, throwing sand in their eyes and rocks at them, showing he always had a mean streak.
  • He commits many vile actions out of pure sadism, including brutally raping, torturing and killing a sow with a stick before killing her piglets, torturing Sam'n'eric and several other boys, and murdering Piggy.
  • He and several other boys murder Simon after mistaking him as the Beast. Unlike Ralph and Piggy, he feels no remorse for this.
  • He attempts to kill Ralph and his gang, even planning to feed Ralph's head to the Beast.
  • While he acts loyal to Jack, there is no implication that his loyalty is legitimate, and he is likely only doing so for pragmatic reasons.
  • He is obviously the most evil, cruel and bloodthirsty of the boys, and a completely irredeemable monster at that as he never shows any mercy or remorse.
