Scarlet King is the main antagonist of the "Shadow Play" duology of season 7 of the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Reaperverse and one of the plot-key antagonists of the entire My Little Pony G4 Reaperverse.
He is the founder and leader of the Scarlet Cult, which has been performing blood rituals and sacrifices throughout Equestria for centuries. It was on his whim that Equestria was founded.
After wanting to overthrow Celestia and Luna and rule Equestria himself, he teams up with Pony of Shadows, but is imprisoned with him in Limbo by the Pillars of Old Equestria. A thousand years later, he and Pony of Shadows are accidentally released from Limbo when Princess Sparkle returns the Pillars of Old Equestria to Equestria. After an extremely long confrontation, the Scarlet King is destroyed by The Gate Guardian.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
In General[]
- While he doesn't have much of a running time compared to other major villains in the My Little Pony Reaperverse, he stands out as the most vile, selfish, and completely devoid of any redeeming or likable qualities villain in the entire My Little Pony G4 Reaperverse franchise.
- He easily manages to outdo the vast majority of villains (including those villains who are Hate Sinks themselves) in terms of heinousness and his crimes in just one appearance, which he has had in the entire My Little Pony Reaperverse.
- His legacy is so bad that the characters mostly remember him only for his crimes and his indescribably horrible personality, as Princess Cadance calls him an "Entity as full of evil as the deepest abyss", while Princess Twilight, Princess Celestia, and the Reaper of Worlds call him a monster.
- He appears to be a much more personal enemy to the Guardians of Harmony and the Guardians of Friendship than the vast majority of the other villains in the My Little Pony Reaperverse, due to him laying the groundwork for almost all of the events in the Friendship is Magic and Equestria Girls franchises. For this reason, he, Dark The Maddened, Shadow Freddy, and Wight Lord are the most personal villains in the entire fourth generation of the franchise for both worlds in which they committed all of their crimes.
- Even the Guardians of Friendship and the Guardians of Harmony, who are known to be very compassionate and merciful groups of heroes, felt nothing but deep hatred towards him for all of his direct and indirect crimes against Equestria and the Human World, and decided that he was too much of a threat to all of existence to be allowed to live in any way.
- While he pretends to want to rule Equestria as a good monarch should, this is merely a facade he presents to his enemies to make them think he has some standards while hiding his true intentions.
- While he claims to be doing "his" race a great favor by purging them of overpopulation, as he believes that if he did not do so, the population of Equestria would simply slaughter themselves to avoid overpopulation, this is all a complete lie, as he simply wanted to make his enemies think his actions were justified by good intentions. It is also important to note that all the acts of sacrifice did not give him any power, which proves that the Crimson King created the Crimson Cult only to satisfy his sick desire to eternally watch the suffering and death of those weaker and more innocent than himself.
- Despite the fact that he cleared the history of Equestria of all data about himself and his Scarlet Cult in order not to traumatize the psyche of the inhabitants of Equestria, he did this absolutely not out of genuine concern for the health of Equestrians, but out of his personal method of governing Equestria, which is based on the fact that Equestrians live carefree, happy and in ignorance of the truth about their state, while he will look down on their innocence and harmony of their lives, knowing that all of them will eventually share the fate of the victims and participants of his Scarlet Cult.
- While he claims that his actions have drastically changed the fate of Equestria (and in truth, to a certain extent, this is true), he says it in a way that suggests that he created the entire My Little Pony universe, and that he has the right to decide who can live in it and who can rule.
- While Slenderman could have done just as badly, as he knew of the Crimson King's existence and plans, and willingly helped him manipulate the events of Equestria through the Fantastic Creatures and other Equestrians, the Crimson King himself shows no respect or even interest in Slenderman's help to him, demonstrating that even those who are truly loyal to him and bring great benefit to him and his plans have no meaning to him at all, other than those who are destined to die and fade into oblivion.
- Basically, he (along with Slenderman and the Dark The Maddened) is responsible for almost the entire plot of My Little Pony G4, and is indirectly responsible for the entire plot of G5. His single action, in the form of founding Equestria, makes him responsible for almost all of the plot synergies in G4 and G5:
- Since it was after his founding of Equestria that Celestia and Luna ascended to the throne, he is responsible for Luna's fall to the dark side, including her subsequent transformation into Nightmare Moon and banishment to the Moon for centuries, as well as the creation of the entity Tantabus (and its subsequent crimes, which are also shared by Crazydream, Luna's former student banished to the Dream Realm), created by Luna as punishment for her crimes.
- It was his founding of Equestria that eventually created all of the Guardians of Equestria groups, including the Guardians of Harmony, the Knights of Harmony (also responsible for Danu and Mightknight's crimes against all of Equestria), the Pillars of Old Equestria (also responsible for the creation and temporary destruction of the Tree of Harmony that Starswirl planted), and the Young Guardians of Harmony.
- It was because of his manipulation that the Pony of Shadows was created, corrupting the Stygian, causing the Pillars of Old Equestria to be transported along with him and the Pony of Shadows to Limbo for 1,000 years until the Guardians of Harmony freed them.
- Because he, rather than Celestia and Luna, introduced the policy of harmony, friendship, and the concept of the Cutie Marks to Equestria, he is responsible for Starlight Glimmer subjecting the population of her village to the tyranny of equality, as well as her and Driftworm attempting to change the Equestrian timeline so that the Guardians of Harmony would never be formed.
- It is due to his founding of Equestria that many of its villains have either attempted to appropriate it for themselves (such as Queen Chrysalis and General Chryzalis, Plunderboid and Seed, King Sombra and Shadow Freddy, and the Storm King and Wight Lord) or strip it of all magic and rule over it (such as Lord Tirek and Slenderman, and Cozy Glow and The Shy Guy). He is also responsible for all of the actions of Shadow Freddy and King Sombra, who cursed the Crystal Empire, destroyed the Tree of Harmony (albeit briefly), and nearly gained control of Equestria. He is also responsible for all of the crimes of Discord (as well as Plunderboid's aiding Discord in selling him his seeds for the Tree of Harmony) and Cosmos, who attempted to use Equestria as a site for their chaos. His responsibility also includes the actions of the Knights of Harmony (including Dana and Mightknight) against all of Equestria.
- He is also indirectly responsible for all of the actions and crimes of the Legion of Doom (both the main one and under the Dark The Maddened's leadership), as well as spreading discord throughout Equestria in the future, which would result in Queen Haven and Slenderman coming to power in Equestria, Celestia, Luna, Cadance and several other characters being killed by the mercenary Offengun, who would also trap almost the entire Guardians of Harmony (except Spike and Lincoln) in stasis-polymer, leaving Equestria in the dark and defenseless against any threat for nearly a hundred years. And he is also indirectly responsible for all of the crimes of Opaline Arcana and the crimes of her squad, consisting of the remainder of the villains from the My Little Pony G4 Reaperverse.
- He is indirectly responsible for his inaction in allowing his master, the Dark Madman, to massacre Ponyville with a hypnotized Night Ripper, who also killed Sunset Shimmer's parents, traumatizing her and setting her on a dark path, which led to her accidentally escaping through the Crystal Mirror to the Human World. This makes him the indirect plot device for nearly every event in the My Little Pony Equestria Girls franchise, including:
- He is responsible for all of the crimes of all of the Lords of Business (including Leland Genos, Filthy Rich, Juniper Montage, and Principal Cinch) who gained their powers through Equestrian magic (as well as its illegal supply to the Human World) brought from Equestria to the Human World by Forestfear.
- As such, he is also indirectly responsible for Celestia's attempt to mistakenly execute Forestfear, and his subsequent escape to the Human World, which also makes him indirectly responsible for the formation of Ministers of Forestfear, the Lords of Business, as well as the formation of the old and new Elements of Disharmony from the Human World, which also makes him responsible for all of their crimes against Equestria and the Human World.
- He is also indirectly responsible for Sci-Twi's transformation into Midnight Sparkle, as well as being directly responsible for the near-constant infiltration of Equestrian magic into the Human World due to Midnight Sparkle's actions, and all of the crimes the human temporary wielders of that magic have committed against the Guardians of Harmony and the civilian population. Including Wallflower Blush's Memory Stone, PostCrush's Time Twirler, Juniper Montage's Magic Mirror, Vincent Valencia's Magic Phone, and Forestfear's Magic Crystals, which were used by Gloriosa Daisy.
- Ultimately, he is almost directly responsible for the formation of the Friendship Guardians via the magical crystals formed from Forestfear's body.
Past[]
- Around 2009 CE, he invaded the SCP Foundation Multiverse, where, having emerged as the most powerful member of the native "superbeings", he decided to claim the multiverse for himself. While his time in the multiverse is vague, it is heavily implied that he is responsible for nearly everything bad in the multiverse, having purposely spawned a huge number of all sorts of superbeings (including the likes of Bobble the Clown, SCP-035, SCP-682, etc.) in order to leave behind a legacy that would wreak havoc across the SCP Foundation Multiverse.
- For decades, his Scarlet Cult operated secretly but successfully across the three future Equestrian races, making one blood sacrifice to the Scarlet King once a month. Knowing that no evidence or even hints could be left behind, the Scarlet King ordered his cultists to destroy all traces of the Scarlet Cult's presence, and ordered the cultists to either commit suicide or put themselves in dangerous situations to ensure the death of all cultists.
- Used the leaders of the three races' distrust of Slenderman to manipulate them into colonizing the future Equestria to increase the population for his cult.
- Created the Pony of Shadows by corrupting Stygian to use his hatred of the Pillars of Old Equestria to kill them, then Celestia and Luna.
Season 7[]
- He brutally tortures the Guardians of Friendship with psychic energy blasts to force the Guardians of Harmony and the Pillars of Old Equestria to surrender and give him the Elements of Harmony, only to lie and take away the magic of all three Guardian teams.
- He destroys almost all of Canterlot, turns Equestria into an abstract world of scarlet chaos, exposing its entire population to all sorts of dangers, and strips Celestia, Luna, and Cadance of their magic, giving it to himself.
- He views Equestrians solely as cattle to be used, manipulated, and over which he can wield unlimited power. He firmly believes that he is doing nothing wrong and that by performing blood rituals that reduce Equestria's population, he is providing "his" race with a valuable service. As proof of his hypocrisy, he literally creates a new Equestrian only to then kill him for no reason in front of Twilight during their conversation, thus demonstrating to her that everything in Equestria and the Unity that inhabits them are like insects to him, which he can use as he pleases.
- Kills the Stygian by burning him alive, sadistically revealing to him the truth that he was the one who created the Pony of Shadows in order to manipulate him for his own purposes.
- During the final battle, when a weakened Princess Twilight states that his actions will not go unpunished and that one day his evil will be erased from Equestria, the Crimson King merely laughs at Twilight's words, pointing out that no one would believe a now-dead Equestrian accusing the respected true ruler of Equestria of such a heinous crime, and hints that he will once again cover his tracks by destroying all evidence and traces of his crimes. The Crimson King then calls Princess Twilight a "naive, stupid horse", informing her that her disobedience to him, as well as Celestia and Luna's interference, as well as the other Guardians in his plans, will be punished, and then prepares to deal them the final blow.
