Sentinel, falsely known as Sentinel Prime, is the main antagonist of Paramount Pictures' 2024 animated film Transformers One.
He was the former chief advisor to the Thirteen Primes, only to later double cross them by taking rulership of Cybertron as part of a bargain with the Quintessons. In turn, this led to him taking the title of Prime from his former masters for himself.
He served as the false ruler of Iacon City for 50 cycles, deceiving everyone who viewed him as a great leader. As a result of his actions, he serves as the key reason for D-16's descent into becoming the ruthless Decepticon leader known as Megatron.
He was voiced by Jon Hamm.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- First of all, he has a remarkably petty motive for becoming a villain. He was once an aide to the 13 Primes, but he brutally killed them, not only to gain power for himself and live like a king, but also because he was irritated by their "uptight" speeches. This makes him the film's equivalent of The Fallen.
- Even then, The Fallen’s reasons weren’t as petty.
- He's a spineless traitor, willingly letting the Quintessons strip Cybertron of Energon and even allowing the High Commander to assault him just so he could remain in power. Doing so would end up killing off all of the Cybertronians, including himself, since they all need Energon to live.
- Sentinel generally appears quite pompous and conceited, similar to his Animated counterpart. Every scene after his reveal rubs into the audience how much of a bully he is.
- This is most notable when it comes to gloating at the captured High Guard members, intending to execute all of them and frame them all as traitors because "the truth is what I make it" and when Megatron/D-16 finally has enough and tries to stand up for himself, Sentinel gloats about how he has taken everything from D's life, beats him down, and then decides to shatter his worldview by revealing that he took his idol, Megatronus Prime's, cog for himself, after Sentinel killed him, and then carve a mockery of his face on him, relishing on the defenseless and bested miner's pain and breaking what he knows as the truth.
- He commits the one of the vilest acts in the entire movie, removing the T-Cogs from unborn Cybertronians and forcing them to work in dangerous mines with little pay under unfit conditions.
- He's the most detestable character in the entire movie, as he lacks Megatron's sympathetic backstory and Airachnid's "Evil Is Cool" moments. Even the Quintessons had cooler designs.
- While the Transformers series often features power-hungry megalomaniacs, Sentinel stands out for his particularly malevolent role. His actions drove Megatron to the brink, ultimately fracturing his friendship with Optimus Prime/Orion Pax, and transforming him into a villain. As a result, Sentinel serves as a deeply personal antagonist for the heroes of the series.
- Sentinel had introduced a shift in Cybertronian Society towards Might Makes Right ideology. In which, he indirectly corrupts the Cybertronians such as the High Guards into abandoning the 13 Primes' idealism in favor of Social Darwinism philosophy and Megatron as well by his classist propaganda. As a result, they became fallen heroes for real after Megatron kills Sentinel and rechristened them as "Decepticons".
- He's pretty pathetic and a terrible fighter (often using long-range attacks to take out D-16 who manage to power through them), as he was brutally beaten down and killed by D-16 despite the former miner only having his cog for mere hours. He also had the nerve to cowardly beg him to spare him despite everything he did to him and his friends. Though D-16 did surprise attack him and greatly damaged him making him weakened after Sentinel was too busy witnessing that he was exposed, so this can be justifiable.
- His death by getting ripped in half by Megatron, while brutal and horrific, is played for complete satisfaction, wish fulfillment and stress relief.
- Overall, he is a malicious Cybertronian willing to betray his own kind to maintain power. His cruel actions were responsible for breaking the friendship between Optimus Prime and Megatron, which contributed to Megatron becoming the ruthless Decepticon leader he is today. This betrayal ultimately led to the war between the Autobots and Decepticons.
Trivia[]
- He's the second version of Sentinel Prime to qualify as a Hate Sink, the first is his Animated counterpart.
- Him and Darkwing are the only characters in Transformer One to be Hate Sinks.
- Sentinel's demise is similar to Jazz from Transformers (2007), the first installment of the Bayverse Transformers films, as both Jazz and Sentinel were killed by Megatron in a similar fashion. However, while Jazz's death is tragic and played for sympathy as others (including Optimus) mourned for him, Sentinel's death was well-deserved and played for stress relief due to his crimes and treachery and also inventing racism classism and ableism.
