Sergeant Major Gross is a minor yet pivotal antagonist of the manga and anime Attack on Titan. He was a sadistic commanding officer of the Marleyan military who served in the Public Security Authorities.
He was voiced by Ikkyuu Juku in the Japanese version and by Bradley Campbell in the English dubbed version.
What Makes Him Despicable?[]
- He took Grisha's eight-year-old sister, Faye, away from him under the guise of returning her home when what he really did was have his sons' dogs brutally maul her to death for fun.
- He raised his sons to be as cruel and sadistic as he is, and turned them into child killers, teaching them extreme darwinism and that being cruel to others is the proper way to live. He is also self-aware of his sadism and acts proud of it.
- He abused his position of authority and power for years, including to commit murders of Subjects of Ymir for fun, always getting away with his actions, as he always lied and abused the law system in Marley to avoid consequences.
- He turned thousands of Subjects of Ymir into Pure Titans via serum injection, after torturing them for their crimes. Although these two are standard punishment to deal with Eldian criminals with grave crimes, Gross is worse because he actively enjoyed what he did, to the point of finding it boring eventually and seeking more excitement in his life by killing in more creative ways through his abuse of power.
- He would have some of the condemned Eldian criminals, such as Grice, be served as bait for the Titans to be chased after as they try to escape only to end up inevitably and hopelessly getting killed for his own sadistic pleasure. He claimed that he did it to quickly lure the Titans away from the wharf used by Marley to land its ships.
- He blatantly admits to Grisha that he wishes for all Eldians to be exterminated out of his own xenophobic hatred for them, as he does not consider them human beings.
- He taunts Grisha about his sister Faye's death and what happened to his wife, Dina. He also unapologetically admits and acknowledges that Faye did nothing wrong to deserve such a brutal death, yet he does not feel any guilt. He admits to lack any remorse and that he is perfectly happy with himself, and even his own subordinates of Public Security are disturbed by his behavior and the fact that he also kills children for fun.
- He attempts to force Grisha to fight for his life against a 3 or 4 meter Pure Titan (and Grisha's own friend) just to watch him struggle to escape, even demanding Grisha to promise not to make his death too quick or generic and show him a new horrifying brutal demise. He also sadistically mocks him by telling him to understand the importance of fun and that his sister is calling for him.
- While he claims to be able to accept his own death when his time comes and criticizes humans for "losing touch" with life and death, in a hypocritical manner, he resorts to scream in terror as he is being eaten by a Titan he created.
