The Sheriff of Nottingham is the secondary antagonist of the 1973 Disney animated film Robin Hood. Under the rule of the immature amateurish Prince John, he taxes the people of Nottingham ruthlessly, stripping them of literally every pent they have.
He was voiced by the late Pat Buttram.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- While the sheriff is described as being honorable by Alan-a-dale, it was most likely a sarcastic comment.
- He takes an abundant amount of glee in robbing people of their money, from forcing coins out of Otto's leg in a cast, to snatching Skippy's birthday present, a single farthing that his entire family broke their backs to save up for him. He even cons a whole cup of farthings out of a blind beggar, though the latter turns out to be Robin Hood in disguise.
- He actually cheats to try and win the archery tournament.
- He boasts that he can see through Robin's disguises but fails to recognize him each time.
- He claims that he isn't afraid of Prince John, even though he once found himself at the latter's mercy when John caught the Sheriff and Sir Hiss making fun of him and threw a pitcher of wine at the Sheriff but missed.
- He tries the excuse that he is only doing his duty, but he clearly enjoys driving people to poverty.
- He is not above stealing from the poor box of a church (offering to take it for "poor Prince John"), and arrests Friar Tuck for high treason to the crown when he decides to rebel against him. It should be noted that in those times, churches were exempt from taxes, meaning he outright wrongfully breaks the law, which is something that a true and honest sheriff would never do.
- He goes along with Prince John's idea to hang Friar Tuck in order to lure Robin Hood into a trap, a decision that appalled Sir Hiss.
- He mindlessly sets the castle on fire in an attempt to burn Robin Hood with a torch.
- When King Richard finds out his involvement in Prince John's tyranny, he is sent along with him and Sir Hiss to the royal rock pile as a punishment.
