“ | Fine. I have no desire to stay in the place of a traitorous embarrassment. You have fallen from what little grace you had... and I know you'll pay for it. | „ |
~ Stella after Stola's told her to leave his house, while also telling him that he would pay for what he did. |
Stella Goetia, known as Stella for short, is the main antagonist of the adult-animated black comedy romantic drama web series Helluva Boss. She serves as the overarching antagonist of Season 1 and one of the two main antagonists (alongside Andrealphus) of Season 2.
She is the vindictive wife of Stolas, the mother of Octavia, and a member of the royal Goetia family of Hell. After finding out her husband cheated on her with the imp Blitzo Buckzo, she ruthlessly plotted his assassination and plans to kill him for his infidelity using any means necessary.
She is voiced by Georgina Leahy.
What Makes Her a Hate Sink?[]
- A photo of her as a child that Paimon showed Stolas when he announced their engagement literally shows her angrily strangling her pets, which clued him in on what she was like and immediately made him cry. Though exactly why she did this isn't clear.
- She's shown to be abusive to her husband even before he slept with Blitzo, calling him "boring", throwing parties about how they're not divorced yet, constantly trash-talking about Stolas, and demeaning his performance in bed within direct earshot.
- She's also neglectful at best to Octavia, carelessly shouting at Stolas while in the same room as her. She outright states she's only glad she had her in the first place so she could stop pretending to want to have sex with Stolas, dismissing her as "[an] egg" that "fell out" of her in the same sentence. And although her taking Octavia on a weekend trip might be a sign that she cares for her, the revelation of why she stays with Stolas most likely means that she simply does it to cause him further pain.
- She's first seen angrily ranting at Stolas for sleeping with Blitzo in their bed, destroying some of Stolas' plants as she does.
- It's also heavily implied that Stella is not mad at Stolas simply for sleeping with any old demon, but specifically with an imp, showing her being very classist and racist.
- She's revealed to have been the one to give Striker the angelic weapons to kill Stolas.
- She taunts and torments Stolas on every chance she has, supposedly lingering by his mansion on weekends, committing psychological abuse and torture for no reason other than the fact she finds it amusing, making her a card-carrying Despicable Baddie who thinks that Evil is fun.
- When Stolas told her to get out of his life, she didn't care about him nor even thought anout her daughter, and even attempting to strike Stolas, telling him that he had fallen from grace and that he will pay for it.
- While she was forcefully married to Stolas just as much as he was to her, Stolas' response was to spend years trying to make their marriage work for both their and their daughter's sake, and she is shown to be ungrateful by showing a cold indifference at best the entire time.
- She abuses her servants and Stolas' collection of plant-monsters, both simply to vent her rage and out of racism.
- By her own admission, the reasons she remains married to Stolas is because she enjoys tormenting him and wants to make him suffer for her own amusement and motiveless malignity.
- She is also shown to be a hypocrite:
- She's upset because Stolas cheating on her is a source of embarrassment for her and the family, but ironically, she has absolutely no problems openly and loudly insulting Stolas in public, even with Stolas standing not twenty feet away, not only Stella is an abusive and terrible wife, but she's also an absolute classist and racist, viewing imps as the lowest of the low, yet she has no qualms hiring Striker, who happens to be an imp himself and refers to him as "darling".
- While she does tell Striker not to kill Stolas, it was only because Andrealphus warns her that everything he owns would go to their daughter, Octavia. Even then she admits that she still really wanted him dead, and this is also shows that she puts her greed above her own daughter.
- In one of her most detestable moments, when Octavia notices that Stolas is about to be seemingly executed for "letting" Blitzo use his grimoire, Stella "comforts" her by hugging her just to stop her reaching Stolas, smirking about what's going to happen to Stolas all the while.
- In another very detestable scene, she prevented Octavia from answering Stolas’ call, calling him a deadbeat while she and Andrealphus mocked Stolas for trying to call his daughter while she was still in the room.
- Later on, while she was relaxing with Andrealphus she mocked Stolas for trying to call Octavia all month, fueling Octavia’s doubts towards Stolas caring more about Blitzo than her. Moreover, despite the fact that Octavia saved her father Stolas from Andrealphus, she (understandably on her side) shuts him up and leaves him with a tear in her eye.
- Despite several comedic moments, all they do is add to her smugness and racism, and she and her actions are played 100% seriously and are a frightfully realistic depiction of domestic abuse.
- While her brother Andrealphus is also smug and detestable, he is at least intelligent, cool (no pun intended) and is played for comedy far more times. She is neither of these things as she's shown to be a completely stupid card-carrying villain who commits crimes for the lulz even it clearly prevents her from succeeding, has no cool factors thus only having despicable, and is mostly played scary and dramatically seriously.
Trivia[]
- Her omission at a 2024 pride parade art was explained by writer Morgana Ignis to be because "Do you think Stella would be the type to attend Pride?". This implies she is homophobic. Though given how she seems to hold some respect to her brother Andrealphus (who is actually gay), it's ambiguous if she is homophobic or not. It’s also possible, due to her lack of intelligence, she simply doesn’t realize her brother is gay. That said, it's worth noting that Stella never once brings up the fact that Blitzo is another man when berating him and Stolas. It's far more likely she's just too uptight to attend.
- Vivienne Medrano stated in an interview that Stella's perspective and potential backstory will be explored in the future. This could potentially change her hateability.
- She is by far one of VivziePop’s most loathsome characters alongside Valentino, Crimson and Adam due to her abuse of her husband, not taking responsibility for her abuse causing him to cheat on her in the first place, putting a hit on him and doing almost everything she can to make his life a living hell. As of “Mastermind”, she and Andrealphus have succeeded in getting Stolas to lose his royal title and has yet to get her comeuppance either at his or Blitzo’s hands, effectively making her a Karma Houdini for now.
