| ~ Sterling berating Cruz for attending the Florida 500. |
Sterling Dunn is the overarching antagonist of Pixar's 18th full-length animated feature film Cars 3.
He is the owner of the Rust-eze Racing Center, an elite training facility with the latest technology. It appears that he also intended to run Rust-eze out of a personal office at the Racing Center. Sterling made his fortune as the "mudflap king" of the eastern seaboard. While Lightning McQueen didn't know of him, Tow Mater did, stating that he does "make a quality mudflap at an affordable price".
He was voiced by Nathan Fillion, who also voiced Preston Northwest in Gravity Falls.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Although he proclaims himself to be a fan of Lightning McQueen, even owning a bunch of memorabilia about the latter's racing career, he's later revealed to be rather disrespectful towards Lightning, as he shows no signs of remorse or second thoughts about selling Lightning's name if he's ever considering retirement.
- Despite appearing affable to McQueen initially and not getting upset over him accidentally destroying the XDL-Mark Z simulator, this was never genuine as he soon told him that "his racing days are coming to an end" and wants him to stop racing to served as a business icon, seeing it as a legacy (as a "trick" or "con" to McQueen).
- At the Chick Hicks' RSN news, he mocked Lightning's training at the RRC, because some of McQueen's fans love for him.
- While he wishes "luck" to McQueen as he prepares to race in the Florida 500, his smug demeanor implies that this was a reminder of what would happen if he loses. When he notices Cruz partaking the race, he orders and forces her to leave the place to train the cars to the center, and then mocks her for her customized paint reminding her that she isn't a racer.
- He opposes Lightning McQueen, because Lightning wanted to replace him by Cruz to getting ready in the race of the 2017 Piston Cup Season.
- After Cruz wins the race and defeats Storm, he ungratefully "congratulates" her and pathetically asks if she wants to race for him, which Cruz rightfully turns down.
- After Tex Dinoco hires Cruz to be Dinoco's racecar, he calls Lightning to go back to his new job before realizing in the board he was winning the race with Cruz.
- After that, the scoreboard says that McQueen is the other winner of the Florida 500 for starting the race and that Cruz finishes it for Lightning. He tries to callously rebuke it to the reporters, but Sally and Mater interrupt him, and later, Tex talks "from billionaire to billionaire." He gets fully defeated when Tex got a second buy to Rust-eze.
- According to Tow Mater, he states that Sterling does "make a quality mudflap at an affordable price."
Trivia[]
- He is one of the few Cars characters who are Hate Sinks but he is not a villainous character.
- He has a Sir Miles Axlerod's photo on his shelves, which could make it possible he's been working with Axlerod. If this was confirmed, considering Axlerod's nature, it would've likely made Sterling worse.
- He is one of the only Cars Hate Sinks to not be athletically related (despite previously owning Rust-eze, which sponsors Lightning), alongside Chick Hicks' Father and Cad Spinner.
- He is somewhat similar to Cad Spinner, as they both care only about themselves and will do anything to get money.
