“ | Let me ask you this: do you ever think about how crazy the show is? [...] A charming name a child would give. 'A' for Alliteration! Big smile! Little life experience. Doesn't quite know what a frown looks like... or a tree... or, well, grass. Dreams of magic portals, haunted mansions, pranks that'll knock you clear to another planet—where does he come up with this stuff!? All seems to come out of nowhere. Smart kid, real smart kid. Some shameful mistakes along the way, though. Immature, tasteless errors. At one point, has to go to jail, just for a day. Imagine that. But he's been getting better and better, little by little. How'd you get on his show? [...] He had a good feeling about you two? And it's easy to see why: he had a vision. All creators do. I've always built devices. Tools I dreamed could change the world. It was fulfilling for a long time. But MePhone? He basically built a world. [...] So, so, how'd you get an interview with him anyway? [...] See a listing online, referral, happened to be in the area? Ooh, what'd you parents say when you told them the news? Hmm, you think you'd remember something like that. Oh, wait. No. No you wouldn't. See, MePhone didn't just make the show... he made you. | „ |
~ Steve Cobs |
Steven "Steve" Cobs, better known as just Steve Cobs, is the main antagonist of the 2011 web series, Inanimate Insanity. He serves as the unseen overarching antagonist in Seasons 1 & 3, and the main antagonist in Season 2. He is the abusive creator of MePhone4 and is the corrupt CEO of the Meeple Corporation. His character is based on the CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs.
He was voiced by James "AnimatedJames" Barkley in "Theft and Battery", Peter Mancuso in "Mine Your Own Business" and Joshua Waters as of "The Reality of the Situation" and "Through No Choice of Your Own".
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Before the series began, he launched an attack on the Light Shimmers and took several of their young. After he ended up giving MePhone4 reality-warping powers by integrating one of the Light Shimmers' eggs into him, he wanted to capture more of their eggs to replicate MePhone4's power.
- He has a history of abusing his MePhones, particularly MePhone4. He also often sends his MePhones to kill MePhone4. In flashbacks, he manipulates MePhone4 to do tasks for himself.
- He is seen to be a manipulative individual once the contestants leave the egg and battery to him and claims that he will be in charge of them soon.
- Claims that Fan shouldn't feel a sense of responsibility for the egg simply because it isn't his. After Paintbrush stood up for him, Cobs forcefully takes the egg only to be foiled by Suitcase.
- He falsely accuses Soap of stealing one of his products.
- When Balloon says that his Meeple Watch is dumb, he pops him.
- It is implied that he has done horrible things to MePhone3GS to punish him for failing to negotiate with the Light Shimmers, which causes him to become paranoid.
- To get MePhone4's attention, he dispatched MePhoneX to suck the life out of several contestants in Hotel OJ such as Pickle, OJ and Nickel, causing panic and grief among the remaining contestants.
- When Knife confronted him about deleting the contestants, Cobs admitted that he was responsible without a hint of remorse.
- He taunted Knife and Suitcase about being unable to remember their lives before the show, before revealing to them that they were MePhone4's creations the whole time. Then he called MePhone4 called so he could hear his contestants' anger towards the revelation, before hanging up just as he could explain himself.
- He imprisoned Knife and Suitcase in a padded cell to make them fight to the death so that the dying contestant would scream and attract the Light Shimmers, so he could steal more of their eggs.
- He also threatened to unplug the Me system (which would result in all of MePhone4's creations being deleted) if they interfered with his plans.
- Upon realizing that Fan had figured out the truth behind why he wanted the Shimmers' eggs, he had MePhoneX delete him because he knew too much.
- After stopping Toilet from hijacking MePhoneX, he caused the remaining contestants to be deleted, with the unflattering labels MePhone4 gave them to torment him further.
- He called Toilet an idiot before he unplugged the Me system right as he was about to achieve his goal.
- He ordered MePhone4 to return with him after all of his creations were deleted through the contestants' sacrifice.
- He tried to stab the Prime Shimmer to steal their core in a last-ditch effort to reclaim the Shimmers’ power.
- Angered that MePhone4 stopped him by warning the Shimmers to get away, he tried to kill MePhone4 by beating him up and later attacking him with his knife, while telling him that he had been nothing to him and that there was nobody to defend him.
- When he found out that the contestants were in MeLife, he doubled down on trying to kill MePhone4 hoping to kill his creations as well. Later when they were all brought back to life, he threatened to kill them knowing they could no longer be revived.
- When MePad came to save MePhone4, Cobs mockingly asked him if he would try to make a speech to redeem him, but MePad rightfully pointed out that he was already irredeemable.
- He caused MePad to sacrifice his life to save the contestants by standing in the way of Cobs' attack. However, Cobs felt nothing after accidentally killing him, and kept trying to kill MePhone4 and the contestants anyway.
- When he seemingly obtained MePhone4’s Shimmer core, he taunted him and the contestants that he had won in the end, though it turned out to be an explosive, leading to his well-deserved death.
- His death is not played for any sympathy, as not only is it accompanied by a rising, victorious score, it is also celebrated by the contestants by having his popcorn eaten and his glasses thrown away while Fan and Test Tube mock his song "The Future is So Yesterday", which he earned due to being the cause of all the contestants and MePhone4's suffering and killing MePad.
- While at first, he seemed to be a Laughably Evil villain, in MePhone4's flashbacks, his detestable traits overshadow his laughable ones.
- Unlike most Object Show villains who either commit crimes for laughs and/or has a lot of redeeming qualities, Steve Cobs lacks both, is taken seriously, and has no redeeming qualities come the third act of II2: The Movie, where he sheds all his honor for MePhone4.
Trivia[]
- He is the first Object Show character to be Pure Evil.
- He is the first character from an Object Show to be a Hate Sink.
- He is the only Inanimate Insanity character to be a Hate Sink. While Trophy was also one he was removed shortly after due to how he felt remorse over his actions when seeing Knife die, therefore, he no longer qualifies.
