I don't have to wreck your birthday. It's bad all by itself- just because it's the day you were born.
~ Tara taunting Michael.

Tara Webster is the main antagonist of the Goosebumps book The Cuckoo Clock of Doom, as well as its TV show adaptation. She is the sociopathic little sister of Michael Webster, who often torments her brother out of enjoyment for seeing his misery.

In the TV show adaptation, she was portrayed by Kristen Bone.

What makes her a Hate Sink?[]

  • She had spent her whole life making her brother Michael miserable and making him out to be a bad kid and a liar to their parents.
  • She has no reason to torment her brother other than liking it.
  • She had regularly terrorized the family cat Bubba ever since he was a kitten, doing things like forcing him to do a handstand while painfully forcing a smile on his face by stretching his mouth into a grin and chasing after him as he desperately ran away.
  • Her parents view her as a perfect angel while treating Michael like garbage.
  • She never got scolded even when her parents caught her doing things like calling Michael a moron and stomping hard on his foot.
  • She ruins Michael's 12th birthday by scratching up his new bike (albeit by accident when she tries to get on top of it), opening all of his presents, and tripping him so that he falls face first into his birthday cake and all his supposed "friends" (including his crush Mona) laugh at him, while their mother scolds Michael for being clumsy.
  • She humiliates Michael in front of Mona and her friends by letting them into his bedroom while he's changing, giving them all a good look at him in his underwear.
  • She steals the hat of a mean jock named Kevin Flowers and puts it into Michael's backpack. When Kevin finds it, the jerk jock proceeds to brutally beat Michael up, leaving him covered in cuts and bruises. She finds this very amusing.
  • She had been cruel ever since she was born. When going back in time, Michael relives an event where a two-year-old Tara asked him for a kiss, only to poke him in the eye and laugh when he tried to do so.
  • She never apologizes, shows any remorse, or has any redeeming or humanizing moments.
  • Her being erased from existence in the end doesn't make her a scapegoat, as she was a realistic depiction of a budding sociopath and may have grown up to be a criminal based on her behavior, and she would have likely committed perjury and framed Michael for her crimes and if she treated him better, Micheal would've brought her back from existence. In the end, she got what she deserved.

Trivia[]

  • She was inspired by a young girl named Tara who met R.L. Stine at a book signing. She asked him to name one of his characters after her and said she wanted her character to be bad.
  • While she's still far from being a good kid in the TV adaptation, her more disturbing and downright evil behavior from the book (tormenting the cat Bubba, who does not exist in the episode and getting Michael beaten up by a jock) is absent, as is the reveal that she had been cruel ever since she was born, with her actions limited to scaring Michael with a fake monster, squirting him with Ketchup, insulting him, sticking her tongue out at him, and humiliating him at his birthday party by tripping him so he falls face first into his cake. She comes off as just a typical spoiled brat as opposed to the budding sociopath she was in the book. This was presumably due to the episode's half hour time limit.
  • She, alongside Mrs. Eakins are the only Goosebumps Hate Sinks to be female.
