Targoviste is gone. The other great cities are lost or losing. Gresit will be the last major city in Wallachia. For all intents and purposes, I will be the church.
~ The Bishop showing his real motive.
Blue Fangs: Your God knows that we wouldn't be here without you. This is all your fault, isn't it?
The Bishop: She was a witch!
Blue Fangs: Lies? In your house of God? No wonder He has abandoned you. But we love you.
The Bishop: What?
Blue Fangs: We love you. We couldn't be here without you. Let me... kiss you.
~ Blue Fangs calling out The Bishop for his hypocrisy and condemning Lisa Tepe to death, before killing him.

The Bishop is a major antagonist in the Netflix's animated series Castlevania, serving as the main antagonist of Season 1. He is responsible for Dracula's war on humanity to happen because he burned his wife, Lisa, to death over a false accusation of being a witch. The Bishop is incredibly fanatical in his beliefs and seeks to spread his control all over Wallichia.

He is voiced by Matt Frewer in English, and by Mitsuru Ogata in the Japanese dub.

What Makes Him Hated?[]

  • He is very rude when investigating Lisa Tepes' home under suspicion of practicing witchcraft, telling her to be silent when all she does is offer to help them find what they need.
  • He has Lisa Tepes burned at the stake for "witchcraft". Lisa was a kind young woman who only wanted to help others. By killing her, he brought Dracula's wrath upon the world, making him directly responsible for the central conflict of the series. This also means he is to blame for the cataclysmic amount of death and destruction that Dracula causes.
  • It's mentioned that he had other (presumably innocent) women executed for witchcraft.
  • When the mayor mentions that he has researched the medical tools Lisa used to help people, the Bishop glares at him, silently threatening to have him executed as well, which leads to the mayor insisting that it was just for research and he would never practice the medicine.
  • When Dracula's face appears in fire before him, the Bishop denies that Dracula is real, despite seeing this with his own eyes, which makes him look incredibly stupid.
  • It is indicated he is happy about the rampage of Dracula, viewing it as a happy accident, as the archbishop has already been killed by Dracula, and with more religious figures falling, his own power is growing. In his words: "Gresit will be the last great city in Wallachia. For all intents and purposes, I will be the Church." This shows that he cares more about enforcing his view of religion than helping others, and views the deaths of all of Dracula's victims as worth it if it means he can rise in power and be able to spread his beliefs.
  • Refusing to admit that he caused the rampage of Dracula, the Bishop insists it was caused by the archbishop having certain "interests" that upset God and brought Satan's forces to attack. He further blames the Speakers for the continued presence of demons, believing that as long as other religious groups exist that do not share his perceptions, it will allow demons to rampage throughout Wallachia, and it will only stop when they are wiped out. This shows how deluded and egotistical he is. It also shows that he never had any real respect for his superiors and believed he was best to be enforcing his perceptions upon others in the church.
  • He does nothing to protect the people of Gresit. In fact, it's hinted that people will be punished just for speaking about the legend of the "sleeping soldier" in the catacombs of the city (later revealed to be Alucard).
  • He demands that the Speakers leave Gresit, threatening to have them killed otherwise. Two of his thugs were going to murder an old man who was part of the Speakers before being stopped by Trevor Bellmont.
  • He threatens to have Trevor killed if he does not leave Gresit.
  • He causes a mob to assemble to try and lynch and kill the Speakers.
  • His actions were so disgusting that God removed His blessing from the church the Bishop was hiding out in, allowing Dracula's demons to attack and kill him.
  • Before being killed by Blue Fangs, he insists once again that Lisa Tepes was a witch. Blue Fangs' line of "Lies? In your house of God? No wonder He has abandoned you" implies that the Bishop knew all along that Lisa was not a witch and just used that as an excuse to execute her because he saw her ability to help people with her medicine as a threat to him, as she could potentially become more valued by the community than him.
  • Even Blue Fangs, a literal demon from Hell, shows contempt for him due to his hypocrisy and delusions of self-importance.
  • The Bishop is a central figure in portraying many of Season 1's themes: the dangers of dogma, intolerance, lies, mob mentality and fanatism. He is cruel, petty and uncaring, displaying sadistic satisfaction in destroying "heathens" and ordaining all sorts of gory crimes against humanity. In short, he is a deluded, wretched, loathsome individual, clearly meant to be as repulsive as possible.
