~ The Matchmaker to Yao, Chien-Po, and Ling in the sequel. |
The Matchmaker is a minor antagonist from Mulan. She is responsible for arranging marriages and evaluating potential brides and grooms. Thus, she holds a great deal of influence, as women of the time are believed to uphold family honor only by marrying and bearing children (especially boys). She has a reputation for being short-tempered and imposing. During "Honor to Us All", meeting the Matchmaker was described as "scarier than the Undertaker." However, in spite of her influence, she was ironically shown to have wrong predictions about certain characters throughout the films.
In the first film, she was voiced by Miriam Margolyes, who also portrayed Aunt Sponge in James and the Giant Peach. Later in the second film, she was voiced by April Winchell.
What Makes Her A Hate Sink?[]
- While Mulan did cheat on her test, one can justify this given how unpleasant she was.
- She’s very impatient, and has a short temper.
- She is unhappy with Mulan for speaking without permission, even though the Matchmaker was having a roll call at the time.
- Though she admits Mulan looks like a bride, she claims that she will never give her family honor. However, Mulan proved her wrong.
- Despite being a woman, she is extremely sexist, almost as much as Chi-Fu, and believes women are only good for marriage.
- While she was understandably upset when she had a series of accidents that she believed Mulan caused, she could have avoided all that if she had just listened to Mulan in the first place.
- Even Grandmother Fa shoots her a dirty look when she finishes berating Mulan.
- In the sequel, Ling (who was thrown out of her building and threw a pot at the latter's head) describes her as being smug and snooty.
Trivia[]
- She is not historically accurate, though this can be justified by her intended purpose to be unlikable.
- Her live-action remake version cannot count as a Hate Sink due to genuinely being surprised that Mulan, the girl who displeased her, became a soldier and gave her honor.
