The Recruiter, also known as The Salesman, is a major antagonist in Netflix's South Korean survival thriller series Squid Game. His job is to approach people in heavy debt or severe financial issues and offer them a chance to join the Squid Games for the prize money.
Besides this, he has a side hobby of giving homeless people the choice between bread or a lottery card, something he takes sadistic pleasure in. While appearing relaxed and polite while recruiting players, he is later revealed to be a ruthless and sadistic individual with a hatred towards impoverished people.
He was portrayed by Gong Yoo in his first villainous role.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Despite having a charming facade in the first season meant to entertain the audience, he fully subverts this entertaining quality in the second season once it reveals how much of a self-absorbed sadist and xenophobe he truly is.
- Overall, he has a massive and petty hatred over impoverished people.
- He preys on them and offers them to play ddakji with him. If they lose, he will make them pay ₩100,000 but will slap them really hard in the face if they can't afford it. He will keep slapping them until they win, which he will then proceed to invite people into the Squid Games that leads them into their deaths.
- He is completely apathetic about any of their deaths and xenophobically says that they're trash.
- Whenever he wasn't recruiting people to the games, he cruelly experimented on homeless people by offering them bread or a lottery ticket, but when everybody picked the lottery ticket, he hypocritically said they threw away the bread and destroyed it in a petty breakdown.
- He preys on them and offers them to play ddakji with him. If they lose, he will make them pay ₩100,000 but will slap them really hard in the face if they can't afford it. He will keep slapping them until they win, which he will then proceed to invite people into the Squid Games that leads them into their deaths.
- At the beginning, he was a Masked Worker who burned and disposed bodies of dead players.
- Once he was promoted to a Masked Soldier, he is directly responsible for killing several players.
- He even emotionlessly killed his father, who was a player in one of the games that begged him for mercy, which is extremely detestable because absolutely nobody in the series is willing to go that far with their killings.
- He beat up and kidnapped two loan sharks that were after him and forced them to play an intense and sadistic game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, Minus One until one of them died, instigating a Kick the Dog moment. When Mr. Kim saves Woo-seok by not playing, he had the former killed.
- He showed absolutely no respect for Seong Gi-hun even though he won the 33rd Squid Game years ago, going as far as to call him "trash that made it out of the dumpster." Then he made him play a game of Russian Roulette just to prove that it didn't make him special. Once Gi-hun was at gunpoint, he taunted him by saying he was a horrible person, but when no bullet came out, Gi-hun would hand the gun to him and karmically throw all those taunts back at him before dying a well-deserved death.
- He showed absolutely no sadness or remorse after hearing these taunts, only remaining a big smile in that he had fun playing his own sadistic game.
- Unlike Oh Il-nam, who genuinely has a lot of sympathetic qualities such as being affable to Gi-hun, caring for his family and having a sympathetic death despite also being completely selfish, and the Front Man, who is affable and genuinely dislikes cheating in the games, the Recruiter is absolutely devoid of any. There is absolutely nothing complex or entertaining about the Recruiter's heinous actions and everything he does only paints him as hateable, heartless and psychopathic sadist.
- Despite Jang Deok-su being more hateable for his cowardice, the Recruiter stands out for his own sadistic games along with his unique emotionless and deprived personality.
