Nobody double-crosses me, Sunny. Not even the best Clipper in the Badlands. Unlike you, I'm not a killer. I'm a trader. And a man with a talent like yours is a very valuable commodity. You wanted to leave the Badlands? You got your wish.
~ The River King right before he sells Sunny into slavery.

The River King is a supporting antagonist in the AMC series Into the Badlands.

He is the ruler of the river trading system that runs in and out of the Badlands, working with the Barons in order to give them various resources, including Cog slaves. His services are respected by all parties within the Badlands, and he serves as a completely neutral figure as he is willing to work with anyone even if they are the enemy of a Baron if it means making a profit.

He was portrayed by Lance E. Nichols.

What Makes Him Hated?[]

  • He is the primary individual responsible for Cogs being brought into the Badlands, meaning he directly profits off of human slavery.
  • After M.K.'s Gift activated and caused him to accidentally kill several Cogs on one of the River King's shipments, he proceeds to put a price on M.K.'s head, prompting bounty hunters to begin hunting him.
  • At some point in the past Waldo did a favor for him which prompted the River King to give him a token which could be traded in if Waldo ever needed assistance with something. Waldo gives this token to Sunny who brings it to the River King, and despite the River King claiming the token could be traded in for a favor, he refuses to do anything for Sunny due to him not being Waldo.
  • When Sunny explains that he wants safe passage for him and his pregnant wife out of the Badlands, the River King mocks him over the fact that he can't escape his past as a killer.
  • He requests that Sunny find a kill M.K., cutting off his head and bringing it to the River King as payment in exchange for getting Sunny and his loved ones out of the Badlands.
  • When Sunny brings him the head of another boy due to the fact that M.K. is one of his allies, the River King eventually finds out about this deception and proceeds to capture Sunny and sell him into slavery as payback. This costs Sunny his family as his wife Veil ends up dying due to Sunny not being there to protect her.
  • He puts a woman named Lily in debt to him, with no conceivable way of escaping his debt. Lily explains that he does this to everyone who operates on the rivers.
  • Sunny, his infant son Henry, and his traveling companion Bajie meet with Lily to get across the rivers. Due to Sunny having a price on his head, Lily sells him out to the River King, who arrives with his enforcers and intends to collect the bounty on Sunny's head to profit off of him a second time.
  • After Sunny kills his enforcers he agrees to spare the River King's life in exchange for him and his companions getting across the rivers safely. The River King gives his word that the rest of his enforcers will not harm Sunny, but he breaks his word and contacts the Black Lotus in order to have them kill Sunny.
  • After Sunny defeats the Black Lotus members, he demands that the River King tell him who they are. The River King explains they are a cult hunting Sunny, and says he can get Sunny away from them for a price, prompting Sunny to finally kill him in a rage, as he knew the River King only ever cared about making a profit and nothing else.
