ā | I wanted what you had for myself, Parker. The things I could do with it... with power like that... But what I got was different. Something better, Parker. Something worse. Something that can live inside, that could liquefy the innards of a man and walk the earth within his hollow shell... Something that could watch. And wait. And fester. See? See now? I AM THE THOUSAND. | ā |
~ King monologuing his goals to Spider-Man. |
Carl King, better known as The Thousand, is a one-shot villain in the Marvel Comics, serving as the main antagonist in The Coming of the Thousand story arc, coming from Spider-Man's Tangled Web #1-3. He is one of Peter Parker's childhood bullies, but unlike nearly all of them, he would continue to harass the superhero, desiring fame and superpowers of his own. He becomes a serial killer that would turn into many spiders and would devour many people from their inside body parts as a way to grow stronger.
The character was created by Garth Ennis and John McCrea.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- Even as a child, Carl King was a horrendous bully that would excessively torment Peter Parker in various ways, ranging from forcing him to doing his own homework, giving him swirlies, to beating him up.
- His motivations on eating the now-dead radioactive spider was out of jealousy, wanting to have the same fame and powers as Parker had. What he doesn't understand was that Peter needed to exercise great power and responsibility to do so, making his motives extremely petty, though he does not care and only decides to get worse from there.
- While his transformation into a thousand spiders was horrific, this is not played for sympathy in the slightest - he brought this upon himself.
- He accidentally used his powers graphically against his mother, wearing her innards as a suit. He realizes each new host can make him stronger, before gleefully using it against his father and against various homeless citizens. The text also implies he raped his father prior to killing him.
- Kills and impersonates Daily Bugle employee Jess Patton before making up a sob story about his supposed tragic life, before luring and knocking the superhero unconscious in Peter's own apartment.
- When Peter's landlord Mr. Ambrose investigates the commotion in Peter's room, King kills and takes over the landlord's body.
- He continues insulting Peter when they engage in a fight. Even Spider-Man, a Pure Good who normally is empathetic and forgiving of foes, refrains from holding back and expresses hatred at his childhood bully.
- Due to how disturbing and petty Carl King was, his death from electrocution and getting crushed by a shoe is played for full satisfaction.
- In sharp contrast to Peter's other foes, like Green Goblin and Carnage (both of them are Pure Evil), the Thousand possesses none of the evil is cool or comedic moments Spider-Man's rogues gallery possesses, with everything about him is played for horror.
