Thomas Wayne is one of the overarching antagonists of Batman: The Telltale Series.
Initially, the public eye viewed him as a genial philanthropist that sought to make Gotham a better place. In reality, he was a ruthless crime lord that controlled Gotham with an iron fist and sided with other mob bosses like Carmine Falcone and Hamilton Hill. When citizens objected to his control, he would purchase their land before drugging and committing them to Arkham Asylum. Even after his death, his actions caused Gotham to be a much worse place to be in than it was before, with many villains being shaped by his influence.
He was voiced by Troy Baker.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- While he still loved his wife and son, unlike most other versions, he was a ruthless crime boss that ruled Gotham with an iron grip alongside Carmine Falcone and Hamilton Hill.
- He ends up using Arkham Asylum as a place to commit political opponents before buying their land:
- When Bruce Wayne ended up befriending Oswald Cobblepot, fearing that his activities may be endangered, he offered to purchase the Cobblepot estate to maintain his power. When Esther Cobblepot refused, he coldly committed her to Arkham Asylum and dosed her with a drug that drove her insane. This ended up kickstarting Penguin's hatred for the Waynes and his villainy.
- When the Arkham family objected to how Thomas Wayne was using the asylum, he had Mr. and Mrs. Arkham committed to the asylum themselves, where they were killed by an unknown inmate. This would cause Victoria to get orphaned before being adopted by the Vales, who cruelly abused her for many years, driving her hatred and vengeance.
- It is heavily implied he has done this to many other opposers to his plans over many years.
- While he did agree to cut ties with Falcone and Hill, this was only after Martha found out about his crimes, and she threatened to turn him into the police and reveal his crimes.
- While he did die trying shield his family from Joe Chill, his death was not exactly played for sympathy in flashbacks due to how cruel he was. Even if it was played for sympathy due to being shot and killed by Joe Chill, the rest of the sympathy goes to his wife (who was a good person despite being married to him) and Bruce (who genuinely cared and loved his parents which was why he became Batman in the first place).
- Due to his vast resources and influence, the Waynes were seen as martyrs as their crimes were not revealed. It was only after the twentieth anniversary of the Waynes' death that the Children of Arkham exposed his crimes, permanently damaging the legacy of the Waynes and causing the public to turn on Bruce.
- Overall, he is a catalyst as to why Gotham has gotten worse because of his control - many villains such as Two-Face, Lady Arkham, and Penguin had their villainy developed in some way or another because of his actions. Bruce's suffering as Batman is also caused by Thomas's crimes. Due to this, Bruce couldn't see them as the light like he did before as a child (until he found out that his mother tried to stop his father's crimes).
Trivia[]
- Telltale Thomas Wayne is the only version of the character to be a Hate Sink as every other version is too sympathetic.
