Tortoise John, is the main antagonist of Rango, serving as the corrupt and manipulative mayor of the town of Dirt. He was the boss of Rattlesnake Jake and Bad Bill.
He was voiced by the late Ned Beatty.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He is a greedy old man, He hoards and steals the towns water, a vital resource for the entire town, while they suffer from a drought, while he calmly drinks water himself, not caring to even share it to the people that actually depend on him.
- He murders anyone who comes close to finding out his corrupt plans. Including all of the previous Sheriff’s, and Mr. Merrimack, the bank manager.
- He is a total hypocrite, as he pretends to care about the people of Dirt by acting like a grandfatherly figure, but his real motivation is to drive them into desperation so he can buy their property dirt cheap, so that he could eventually purchase the entire town and remake it as he sees fit. His hypocrisy is also shown when he stops Rattlesnake Jack from killing Beans seeing it as unfair and too brutal, but then he remorselessly and sadistically locks her and Rango (when they defy him) in a water vault in order for both of them to drown, while smiling as he watches, an equally vicious death that he himself was going to commit.
- He betrays Rattlesnake Jake, an enforcer of his that was nothing but loyal to him, by attempting to kill him when he is no longer useful and because he sees Jake as an outlaw, and John thinks that the days of outlaws are dead now, showing his lack of care even to those loyal to him.
- He is an utter coward, as when Rango and Beans escape his water vault, he pathetically tries to negotiate with Rango to save himself, he then gets sacrificed by Rango so that Jake could finish him off, this was played for karmic satisfaction.
- He lacks any sympathetic or redeeming traits. He isn’t acting out of desperation, extremism, or even a tragic backstory, his motivations are purely rooted in greed and a twisted and delusional vision of progress.
Trivia[]
- Appropriately, he is inspired by fellow Hate Sink Noah Cross from Chinatown.
