~ Tsuneo Iwami's infamous quote. |
Tsuneo Iwami is a major antagonist of Sega's Like a Dragon (Ryū ga Gotoku, formerly known as Yakuza in the west) franchise.
He is the main antagonist and final boss of the 2016 beat-em-up drama video game Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, the sixth and final installment of the Yakuza Saga.
He's the son of the Yomei Alliance's chairman, Heizo Iwami. After being denied a career in the criminal underworld, Iwami starts a conspiracy to usurp his father and fulfill his ambitions and will go to any lengths to achieve it, no matter how amoral it is. He's also one of the arch-enemies of Kazuma Kiryu, and is by far his most hated enemy yet.
He is voiced by and modeled after Nao Oomori.
What makes him hateable?[]
- Along with Sugai and the Saio Triad, leaded by Big Lo and Jimmy Lo, he causes a mass arson in Little Asia, endangering (and poossibly killing) several civilians. This leads to the arrest of most influential Tojo Clan's figures, like Daigo and Goro Majima.
- Kills Big Lo's son, Jimmy Lo, after they outlived their usefulness. This leads to a war between the Saio Triad and the Tojo Clan, leaded by Sugai
- After Kiryu and the Hirose Family interrupts a meeting between the Yomei Alliance and Takumi Someya, when they thought they kidnapped Someya's ex-wife, he reminds to Kanji Koshimizu that their actions cannot be unpunished, clearly referring to the Yubistume's practice(cutting of a finger)
- After Kiryu reveal the secret of Onomichi, Iwami murder his father under Admiral Daidoji's orders, for failing to keep the secret. He also expresses his hatred towards him, not for being a neglectful father, but only because he denied him a place in the Yakuza, instead giving him "only" a luxurious civilian life.
- He kidnaps Kiyomi and forces Kiryu and Someya to fight to death, leading to Someya's suicide. Despite his sacrifice, Iwami orders to Koshimizu to kill her anyway (luckily, Koshimizu spares her and fakes her death) He also punches her, calling her a stupid bitch.
- Kidnaps Haruka and her infant son Haruto, and takes them hostages, forcing a defensless Kiryu to be beaten by him, while rambling about his power-hungry nature. This makes him extremely dishonorable, and unlike other Kiryu's opponents, he refuses to defeat him in a fair fight.
- After he punches Kiryu to the ground,he gives him ten seconds to get up, threatening to kill Haruka and Haruto
- After the Hirose Family rescues Haruka and Haruto, Iwami gets curb-stomped in battle by Kiryu, which leads him to shamelessly plead for mercy. After Kiryu makes clear that he intends to give him none, he orders Sugai to kill Haruka and Haruto, forcing Kiryu to protect them with his own body. This convinces him to fake his death, and cutting ties with his loved ones, to prevent them to be harmed anymore.
- He's of the very few villains, who was almost killed by Kiryu, the other being Shibusawa. However, Iwami is way worse, as he lacks Shibusawa's tragic backstory, bravery and Evil is Cool moments, not to mention that while Shibusawa was ready to face death with dignity, Iwami instead becomes a crying coward. It should be noted that Kiryu, during the events of Yakuza 0, was more hot-blooded, while he's more reasonable and calmer during the sequels.
- Futhermore, Iwami is one of the few final boss/main antagonists that Kiryu despise so far (the other being Shibusawa and Kyohei Jingu). Kiryu has respected all of the other final bosses (Nishiki, Ryuji, Mine, Daigo and Aizawa) prior to Iwami in a way. The fact that Iwami is the only final boss whom the calm and reasonable Kiryu truly disliked shows that the developers intended for Iwami to be hated by the audience.
