~ Lord Walder sacrificing his young wife to kill the Starks, showing his lack of care for anyone but himself. |
Walder Frey is a major antagonist in the Game of Thrones series. He is the Lord of the Crossing, head of House Frey, and lives in the Twins, two castles in a strategic position. In the third season of TV series, he is the main antagonist of Catelyn's POV storyline, and overall serves as one of the major antagonists of seasons 3 and 6.
He was portrayed by David Bradley.
What Makes Him Hated?[]
Both versions[]
- Doesn't help anyone in his war. When Robert's rebellion was decided he turned to Lords Hoster Tully and Robert Baratheon to raise the banner only after the war was decided.
- He leads the "Red Wedding", in which the King of the North, Robb Stark, his mother Catelyn (and his pregnant bride Talisa in the TV show), in addition to hundreds of invited guests, are killed. As a result, the northern rebellion ends and the Boltons rule his place in the north.
- He provokes the massacre after he pretends that his guests will be honored in his house.
- He desecrates his victims' bodies in various disturbing ways:
- He let his men cut off dead Robb Stark's head and replaced by his direwolf Grey Wind's, by crudely sewing in its place, and then triumphantly paraded Robb's horrifically mutilated corpse.
- In the TV series, his men are seen outside their castle parading Robb's headless corpse on a horse while mockingly chanting, "King in the North! Here he comes, the King in the North!" as a final insult.
- He let his men completely undress Catelyn's corpse and throw it in the river like garbage, just to mock House Tully's funeral custom.
- He let his men cut off dead Robb Stark's head and replaced by his direwolf Grey Wind's, by crudely sewing in its place, and then triumphantly paraded Robb's horrifically mutilated corpse.
- According to Tywin he did the Red Wedding only after he was promised honors and titles and added to the petty excuse that Rob broke his promise to marry his daughter.
TV Series[]
- He treats women misogynistically.
- He proves how much he doesn't care about his sons and daughters and the rest of his family, only looking for them to get married and leave the Twins.
- He keeps Edmure Tully his captive to use to negotiate against Brynden Tully. Even after successfully retaking Riverrun, he leaves him a prisoner.
- He mocks Jamie for both being called "King Killers", although he himself considers it pride unlike Jamie.
- When he meets Arya in disguise (who wanted to kill him) as a household servant he tries to harass her.
- Since he is a despicable character lacking any redeeming qualities his death at hands of Arya (as Catelyn's daughter and Robb's younger sister avenging them) was fully justified and deserved.
Trivia[]
- Walder Frey is widely regarded both in-universe and out as one of the most repulsive characters in his setting, as even David Bradley considered him irredeemable, despite having fun with the role.
