William Tavington is the main antagonist of The Patriot.
He was portrayed by Jason Isaacs.
What Makes Him A Hate Sink?[]
- He kills Benjamin's son Thomas (who is a young boy), later remarking that he was a stupid boy. He also decided to have Gabriel hanged instead of making him a prisoner of war (as Cornwallis most likely would have done).
- He orders the Patriots who were wounded in action to be executed.
- Though they're technically on the same side (and he allows Tavington to do what he wants), Cornwallis is shown to dislike him. Cornwallis feels that Tavington's tactics to win the Revolutionary War are unnecessarily brutal.
- Even Captain Wilkins, who felt that those who betrayed Britain should be executed, is hesitant to follow his orders.
- He sets a church full of townsfolk on fire, uncaring that one of them decided to tell him where Benjamin's hideout was. Incidentally, one of the victims was the wife of Benjamin's son Gabriel (Anne), as well as her family. While William later killed Gabriel in self-defense, this was the reason why Gabriel tried to have him killed in the first place.
- He decides to disobey Cornwallis and charge at Benjamin's platoon, which costs the British the battle. Cornwallis is furious.
- Benjamin swears that he will kill him before the Revolutionary War is over, which he does.
Trivia[]
- He has been criticized for portraying the British in a negative light, though he is not generally regarded as detracting from the movie that he appears in.
