Dr. Yi Suchong is a major antagonist of the video game series BioShock, serving as a posthumous secondary antagonist of the 2007 game BioShock 1, a posthumous character in the 2010 sequel BioShock 2, a supporting antagonist in the prequel novel BioShock: Rapture, and the secondary antagonist of the 2013 DLC expansion BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea.

He is a cruel and self-absorbed scientist who created the Big Daddies and Little Sisters in the series, by horrifically experimenting on people. He also played a big part in manufacturing plasmids for Fontaine Futuristics and Ryan Industries, and helped Frank Fontaine in his attempt to take over Rapture, by mentally conditioning Jack, the main protagonist of the first game, Fontaine's "Ace in the Hole" and Andrew Ryan's son.

He was voiced by James Yaegashi.

What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]

  • During World War II, when he witnessed his people being murdered by Japanese soldiers, he cowardly betrayed his fellow Koreans by selling opium to the Japanese forces to gain profits and have his life spared.
  • Although he was bullied and treated poorly as a servant to Japanese nobles, by their children when he was younger, none of this make him tragic, as he conducts horrible experiments on children who had nothing to do with his past experiences, and in spite of his hatred of children, doesn't mind conducting those same experiments on adults.
  • He was one of the primary scientists who manufactured gene tonics and plasmids, to sell ADAM to Rapture's masses. Despite the extremely dangerous side effects, like insanity and death, he continued to sell ADAM with cold indifference to the side effects, which resulted in many of Rapture's citizens becoming murderously insane, leading to the downfall of Rapture.
  • He oversaw a variety of plasmid experiments, which frequently resulted in the subjects suffering from injuries, insanity or death, just to test the potency of plasmid products. In Bioshock: Rapture, in one of his ADAM experiments, he turned a human and several animals into a hideously mutated creature, still alive and in pain when he presents it to Fontaine as an example of ADAM's deadly side effects.
  • He willingly experimented on and brainwashed many innocent men and young girls to turn them into Big Daddies and Little Sisters respectively, heavily mutating the former's bodies while exploiting the latter to produce ADAM. It is heavily implied that Suchong's operating procedures to convert girls into Little Sisters are lethal.
  • To test the "Would You Kindly" method he created to brainwash Jack, he used it on him when he was a child to force him to murder his puppy, by making Jack snap the puppy's neck.
  • He is verbally and physically abusive towards the Little Sisters. When he foolishly slaps one of them just for getting on his nerves, and calls her a "filthy little shit", he is karmically killed by a Big Daddy nearby.
  • Compared to other villains in the series, he lacks any Evil is Cool qualities or well-intentioned motives, merely being a sociopath who conducts horrible experiments while working under Ryan and Fontaine all for the sake of money.
