Before, you were insignificant specks of dust. But now that you've banded together, you've become an eyesore. Detectives, my a**. Annoying little sh-ts.
~ Yomi Hellsmile abusing Yakou Furio and the detectives at the end of his introduction scene.
Oh, Martina. There's something I wanted to ask you before you go. What's...love?
~ Yomi taunting Martina before attempting to execute her with an Amaterasu Corporation-made presser, mockingly telling her he doesn't know what love is.

Yomi Hellsmile is the secondary antagonist of the 2023 adventure game Master Detective Archives: Rain Code.

He is the director of the Amaterasu Corporation Peacekeepers, also meaning he is forced to submit to CEO Makoto Kagutsuchi to his disdain, and the enforcer of what qualifies as law in Kanai Ward. In reality, Yomi is a corrupt, malicious and loathsome individual who couldn't care less about law or justice despite preaching such and is willing to destroy the lives of others to get ahead in life, holding no compassion for anyone or anything before him. His means of getting into power prior to the story was trading with outside military sources, allowing him to use coercion to stay in control while remaining immune to any legitimate punishment for his corruption and abuse of others. He is the archenemy of Yakou Furio, chief of the Nocturnal Detective Agency.

He is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka in Japanese and Howard Wang in English.

What Makes Him Despicable?[]

  • He is depicted as having no tragedy or good intentions for what he does, that being lording over Kanai Ward with his subordinates and covering up cases that transpire in the city for his own benefit, let alone care, empathy or consideration for other people, and most of his characterization involves him relentlessly insulting people because he sees himself as superior to those around him. The only reason he attacks the player using the Peacekeepers until the events of Chapter 4 is because he feels like he's in the right and ultimately doesn't care whose life he has to ruin to get ahead of others.
  • Regarding his Peacekeepers, it's very clear that they're only scapegoats to his cause, including the named ones that antagonize Yuma per chapter. He doesn't care about any of them at all even if they help him fulfill his psychopathic ideals.
  • Unlike his subordinates, he has no entertaining features or redeeming qualities in the slightest, let alone remorse or agony. In fact, he takes sadistic pleasure in being a control freak over Kanai Ward and doesn't care about good intentions or its people, not even in a bizarre and twisted way like his superior Makoto Kagutsuchi.
  • Though Yomi and Makoto's arguments with one another are meant to highlight their apathy towards Kanai Ward and Amaterasu in general as the main antagonists of the game, it's also meant to highlight how Yomi is far more egotistically villainous in comparison to Makoto while also showing that Yomi's overt malevolence forces Makoto to reveal how little he truly cares about Kanai Ward's conditions alongside Yomi, seeing the city as a mere means to an end just as much as his corporate rival does. Despite this, Makoto's willingness to be more cooperative during these arguments is meant to show that Makoto is still more likable as a villain than Yomi simply because he can exercise basic courtesy, something Yomi repeatedly shows himself to be unable to do.
  • The only reason he had Yakou Furio kill Dr. Huesca is because Huesca was opposing him and he needed some way to get rid of detectives and Huesca at the same time, something his Mystery Phantom explains to Yuma and Vivia in the Mystery Labyrinth. Makoto is also the driving force behind that murder but his motive was still altruistic in a twisted way, that being that Kanai Ward would've likely been destroyed by Yomi's apparent plan to leak homunculus information with Dr. Huesca behind the scenes. Yomi just wanted to ensure no one could stand in his way and that was it. The fact that his exploitation of Huesca was the only reason he at all had power over Amaterasu Corporation is irrelevant to him.
  • Chapter 5 reveals he is the true driving force behind Amaterasu Corporation's development until Makoto came in as CEO and expanded its assets even further, to the point that the former CEO was going to promote him first. He had the Fake Zilch silence anyone daring to expose his methods and he willingly ordered the conduction of the homunculus experiment that would lead to all of Kanai Ward's residents dying and being replaced unknowingly, something Makoto Kagutsuchi would take advantage of for his own ends.

Trivia[]

  • Kazutaka Kodaka, who created Yomi, has personally described Yomi as "the disgusting guy of disgusting guys", and has outright stated that "he's too naive for Danganronpa".
  • Yomi is despised more than the main antagonist of the game, Makoto Kagutsuchi, who is by all accounts a madman of his own kind covering up that Kanai Ward's population are defective homunculi, of whom don't even know who or what they are because they all have amnesia, in forceful ways that none of them at all requested. The likely reasoning for this might be because, despite Makoto's villainy being so extreme and his obviously negative portrayal by the narrative, Yomi was the one who partook in the creation of those homunculi in the first place with Makoto actually having no responsibility for it himself; this not even being a theory but outright stated by the man himself at the end of the game. However, the real reasoning is due to the fans worshipping Makoto while hating Yomi, despite Makoto showing himself to still be more heinous than Yomi, even by the standards of the game's in-universe protagonist.
